Echoing the classic French novel by Henri Murger, based on the iconic opera by Italian composer Giacomo Puccini and sung in French, Scènes de la vie de Bohème is an intimate dramatic adaptation of Giacomo Puccini’s classic opera. Reduced to the four principal roles, this new version is designed to focus on the emotional ties between the two couples while telling a story of the Chinese cultural diaspora in Paris: a story of love, loss, art, poverty and the richness of life.

A young, mischievous child,
Toys and household objects in rebellion,
A one-act fantasy.

As their inaugural production, Opera Box is proud to present Ravel’s surreal one-act opera. Expect the unexpected with Opera Box’s post-Christmas take on Ravel’s The Child and the Enchantments, in which a young mind journeys from chaos to understanding.

Clocking in at just one hour, with reduced orchestration, and performed in English by some of Hong Kong’s most exciting voices, Opera Box strips The Child and the Enchantments to its essence, highlighting the tension between innocence and maturity. An opera to celebrate what has past and to welcome new beginnings. Suitable for both the opera-loving and the opera-curious.

MENDELSSOHN: Incidental Music to A Midsummer Night’s Dream

After triumphant runs in Taipei and Hong Kong, multi-talented actress Sylvia Chang joins the Macao Orchestra as narrator for Shakespeare’s enchanting comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The play’s multiple levels of romance and humour have inspired generations of artists, none more popular than Felix Mendelssohn, whose marvellous balance of classicism and romanticism is most famously displayed in a Wedding March that has won the hearts (and celebrated the nuptials) of countless couples. This adaptation by Yuan-pu Chiao features all of the incidental music that Mendelssohn penned for the play, and the Macao Orchestra is joined by soloists and the female chorus of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Chorus. Every note by Mendelssohn will delight us.

Neuköllner Oper: Lisas Land des Lächelns

The young composition and writing duo Abigél Varga (music) and Elisabeth Pape (lyrics) bring Lehár’s world-famous operetta about the meeting of two cultures from two worlds to our contemporary polyglot Berlin, lovingly and stringently streamlining the original to a quartet of young people searching for love and an idea of themselves. Lehár’s music also raises the question: can we today, in our generation, still meet each other with these melodies and truly express our feelings?
